My potatoes that I planted have now got some baby potatoes poking up on the surface of the tubs What do I do? Is it time to turn the tubs out?

Re: my potatoes (help)

If you think they're big enough to eat? If not - cover the spuds with some new soil, or they will go green (and then you shouldn't eat them. It's a sign that they may have solanine (a poison) in them.

Re: my potatoes (help)

Really not sure; hope someone else can help. I'd be inclined either to pick & eat them, or add a layer of soil to cover them. I believe I read somewhere that sunlight on potatoes can turn them somewhat greenish under the skin...chemical called solanin, which is bitter tasting, and not good for you.

Re: my potatoes (help)

Potatoes are the same family as deadly nighshade. The solanin isn't that bad, but really not good for you. Apparently the green stuff is just chlorophyl, but it's a sign that the spud may have developed solanin as well, so best to avoid. Semi-reliable source for that info.

Shame to waste new potatoes. When was tea again?

Re: my potatoes (help)

Remove the green ones, cover up with more soil - if you have.
If they're big enough (from your wee lookee), serve some tomorrow for tea? I know you're not supposed to dig about too much, but I've always excavated on one side and hoiked some out for a taster.
