Are you 'common'?Fascinating sounding website, which maps surnames against areas of the country. Here's the link - haven't been able to navigate it as it's really busy after being mentioned on the BBC website. http://www.spatial-literacy.org/ Bookmark it and try later............and let us know if you find anything interesting

Finally got onto this site. Interesting results but not suprising. Searching on my 'now' name - i.e.OHs surname, found that it is concentrated in Edinburgh/Eastern Borders but found throughout Britain. Not suprising as he is from there. Go back to the 1881 map and the name is much more concentrated in the Ed/Borders region.................folks just didn't move about then! Looked up my maiden name, which is a sort of 'rural occupation' name. Concentrated in rural areas (partic SW and, suprisingly the Aberdeenshire/Grampian area) and much more so on the 1881 map. So - good luck getting into the site. It's a bit slow but ...... |

Maiden Name totally Uncommon Married name Common as muck! OH name totally Uncommon Think I'll go back to my maiden name, liked it better than my married name anyway. I'm the only one in the house with my maried surname anyway. Darrle changed his to OH's a couple of years ago. |
