You'd have thought the cat would have been the problem, cat's being known for their independent and sometimes almost contrary natures. Not so. Flame was leading the way and, having forgotten his forray into doghood, was creeping through the bracken at the edge of the path, a flickering glow of bright orange almost-but-not-quite clear between feathers of thicker and thinner white. Now and then he'd look back to make sure we weren't starting anything more worthwhile to stalk than the wisps of denser fog, or the odd beetle available to him.
No, it was the dog who had been faithfully trotting in circles around us, following whatever traces of scent that canines find around paths like this, who suddenly pricked her ears...
