Dog Owners....

Yesterday my son and his friend were playing in the friend's back garden, when the next door neighbour let their dog out into their own garden.

The dog is a mixed breed fairly large dog and is very boisterous.... well yesterday he was more than boisterous and he was barking and growling and then jumped the fence into Sean's friends garden and started towards the children.

There was a five year old girl and two 13 year old boys - the little girl ran inside screaming as the dog charged at them, and Sean and his friend also started running as the dog raced towards them. Sean and the little girl got inside, but Sean's friend ended up having his leg ripped apart as he tried to get in the door. The dog then got in the house and the boys had to fight it off with a dining chair.

The boy needed hospital treatment and is now off school.

My question - if this was your dog, or your child involved would you have the dog PTS? I think this has to be done. Do the police force this to be done? Can the boys parent or myself demand this?

PS Know not all dogs are bad!

Re: Dog Owners....

Good God Donna - that is terrifying!!!

I believe if a dog can be proved dangerous there are grounds for destroying it. Not sure of the process though. I would start with the police or search some websites for info. I suggest also talking to the other childrens' parents as 2 parties' voices are louder that one

Re: Dog Owners....

Well I have one thing to say - if any dog of mine bite anyone (unprovoked) I would have them put to sleep.

Hope the boy is alright,

Re: Dog Owners....

Think Sean will now have a well founded fear of dogs. He has never liked them anyway.

The boy had tetanus injections and was patched up. Sure he will be alright, but also now terrified of dogs. The boys father has always had a fear of dogs too, and the little girl was traumatised. She didnt go home that night and is too scared to go back to the house.

I just cant believe the owner would even consider keeping the dog alive. They cannot control it and keep it in their own garden. They should not be allowed to keep it in my opinion.

Re: Dog Owners....

They should definitively not be allowed to keep it. How irresponsible can you get? Poor Sean, and how very scary for the other children.

PTS - don't know. Don't know if it's irreversible since I don't know dogs well enough.

Re: Dog Owners....

The boys dad is thinking of moving house because of this... why should he have to leave a house he has lived in for years, due to the neighbours dog attacking everyone...

Feel bad for them all.

Re: Dog Owners....

If any of my dogs had ever bitten anyone unprovoked then I would have no problem in having the dog PTS.

Re: Dog Owners....

Like Kazz, if that had been one of my dogs, I would have it pts, no question...The dog is obviously dangerously out of control..

Re: Dog Owners....

i love my dog to bits, but if he ever did that to anyone id take him to the vets myself and get him PTS, if it was a nip and it was in my own home then no, but for a dog to jump over a fence n do that, some thing was not right.
