That gel stuff. It's sweet so they gather it up and take it back to the queen who eats it and expires.
Don't know about pet safety - you'd need to check

Re: Ants-what to do?

I once came home to a kitchen invaded by ants - on the work tops, in the cupboards, in everything. Was disgusting!!!

I spent an hour or two hoovering them all up (again my hoover saves the day from the beasties!!) and then went round the outside of the house with powder that was safe for pets (cant remember the brand).

Keep all food away as they can sense it from outside. The kitchen event was put down to Emma's schoolbag with biscuits and sweets in on the floor. I watched them come in through the front door and walk along the hall, through the dining room and into the kitchen!!! Then back out again.

Good old Dyson!!
