Sage Dobermann does his bit for the breed.

Went along to the "PROTECT" study into Dilated Cardiomyopathy today for Sage to have his ultrasound and ECG. Early pre-clinical signs have been found in Dobermanns in Canada, and a drug that helps significantly with treament is also believed to help dogs in the pre cilincal stage, i.e not showing andy outward symptoms. Sage was not suitable for the study after the tests as he was NORMAL!!!! but we were pleased and very willing to take part in these trials if necessasry. Good to see Dobermann folk taking an interest in what is a BIG killer of these dogs, I wish all breeders of all dogs would do the same.
Dawn.

So pleased to hear that your Dobie is clear of DCM. Two of my dobes died within three weeks of one another before it was a recognised problem, having spoken to my vet about it since I am pretty sure that DCM was the cause. The dog was nearly ten and was ill for about a week before he died, and the bitch dropped dead whilst chasing a rabbit. Two of her litter brothers had to be pts around the same time. Anything that will prevent the heartbreak I and other dobie owners have had must be a good thing for the dogs. Logoes

My Bitch was just over 6 yrs old, and obviously her littler mates were too, for three from one litter to have a heart problem appearing within 4/5 weeks was too much of a co-incidence. Logoes.

Thats really sad. I lost mine 13yrs ago, so like you DCM wasnt thought to be a big problem, but now its huge, just like Von Willebrands disease, Wobblers and Hypothyroidism. Time for breeders to get their heads out of the clouds, forget about winning prizes at shows and saving face, and get the breeds health sorted!

I had my old lad's grandson, and happily he lived to the good age - for a dobe - of 12, finally had to let him go because he had spinal trouble, don't know if that was a result of an accident he had or whether it was spondolopathy, but he was an accident prone dog - never looked where he was going - typical dobe!!!
