A dog question

My dad has A GSD, he adores her to bits. She is about 3 now i think.
Anyway since he has had her she has had fits.

He has taken her to the vets everytime for checks, but both the vet and my dad are reluctnat to put her on treatment for her epilpesy as it would knock her out, giving her a low quality of life.

I am trying to find a natural remedy that may help.

I have looked on woofnwhiskers, cant find anything.

just wondering if anybody knows anything that may help?

thanks

Good luck.

Re: A dog question

I'm suprised at the statement that epilepsy treatment will reduce her quality of life. Surely having fits does that?
I think you will find several DW members with epileptic dogs who get on well on 'conventional' medication.
You will prob find some herbal etc suggestions too.
Haven't heard of any humans going for alternative/complementary treatments, but then I haven't been looking.
Good luck to all

Edit: here's a DW link http://www.dogweb.co.uk/showthread.php?t=32383&highlight=experience+epilep sy

Re: A dog question

GSD's are prone to Epilepsy, its common within the breed. The quality of the dogs life will not be reduced, when the correct dose is achieved the dog will be much better, obviously with having far less seizures and feeling better within herself. My friend had an Epileptic GSD that competed in working trials for 9yrs, with no problems at all.

Re: A dog question

thanks for that Dm.
My dad does have a lot of experience with GSD's, having been a police dog handler.
His vet has said the treatment for her fits will make her permanantly dozey etc. AS with many dogs who have fits, there seems to be no frequency to them, she goes a week or two with none, then may have three in a day.
none are classed as severe,
maybe the statement of the dopiness was made as she has the condiotn midly, I dont know, I know less of dogs than I do of cats.

Found that link very usefull though thanks, have sent the link on to my dad to take a look at.

As I said the correct dose of the drug best suited to the dog will NOT make any difference at all to the dogs quality of life. I'm sure if Az sees this he will say similar, he has some experience of Epilepsy.
