An observations i made..

I made an observation tonight (based on a broader scale of course!).
I was sitting on the patio reading the pile of magazines that were left here today when i noticed Clementine "playing" on the lawn.
Florrie and she were on the other side of the fence mooching while Ralph was playing with his big beanbag (messy!), he and florrie can be together again (supervised) as she is seeminglly outta season (But taking NOO chances!). Anyway back on topic, so clementine and florrie were having a mooch around..and they started to play, and it was the way they were playing that sparked my observation off..Clementine wasn't batting, flicking etc..she was very much "wrestling", "Biting", "Pouncing", and "Mouthing"..and i watched her do this with Florrie..and then with Ralph over the duration of about two hours..and then i started to think back to when we had Elsa, whenever they played..it would end in a fight as Clementine never played like Elsa did..Clementine never wanted to chase/bat/leap around..she wanted to play quite "doggy style" (Not intended in a rude way!). When Clem is out and about she constantlly is getting into scrapes...could it be to the fact she tries to play, but in a non feline way that is misconstrewed (sp) by other felines as a proposal of attack (?).
In her every day life she never behaves feline like at all...she very rarely climbs on things (so to speak) she usually plodds around us..and has to have her nose in anything..she fetches things, catches biscuits like a dog, will happily play with squeaky toys rather than bell related objects.
Now..she (and her bro's) were about 4 weeks when we took them from Sue's stableyard...Polly (JRT-no longer with us) took to them in a very motherly way..at about 7 weeks we found VERY good homes for her three brothers (2 of whom stayed together) and they are still very much happy there 3 years on. But Clementine stayed here..and was allways very much into nothing bar Polly, she would suckle from her, copy her (including going out with Poll-squatting and peeing on the lawn!) in everyday dog things, started to play like a canine, went for the letterbox, chewed things (NEVER SCRATCHED LIKE A CAT!!), didn't understand she could jump on high things for a heck of a long time, insisted on being by Polly's side and greeting any visitors (like a dog does-and she still does this now), would bound up to you (not waltz over like a cat-BOUND like a dog, all legs!) when you first come through the door, never comprehended she could catch birds until later life-allways just stuck to rats, mice and rabbits-and i swear thats only because Polly used to see to them!, started to visist the dogs who pass our house (neighbours ones!) and wash/greet them..and overtime refused all contact with any neighbouring felines.
Now Elsa was very doggy orientated-but to no extent like Clementine, Elsa merely acted like any cat in a dog home.
When Clementine started to go out more (we tried to keep her a house cat for a long time-realised it wasn't working!!) she began to join us on walkies (meeting us over the *sowe valley*-going via the back of our cul-de-sac and off a bit) and would stroll alongside me and the dogs (accumalating overtime i guess one would say) and she would chase them into the tall grass etc (we often got funny looks from onlooking doggy walkers!).
Nowdays-she is found sleeping (sprawled out-hardly ever cat curled) with the dogs, or playing fetch games and wrestling etc, or saying hi to any dog that passes.
She never has liked assosciating with other cats...she looks at them how a dog would (no word of a lie!) yet if she see's a og in the street, she saunters off up to them, tail high bawling her head off!
She acts like a dog, has very little feline tendancies-is often loved by cat haters as (in their words) "She's a dog in cats clothing", and she generally doesn't understand *prissy* feline concepts on life IMO!
So it makes me ask your opinions (regarding my broad observation) do you think Clementine actually believes she is a dog?
*hope it made sense!*

VERY interesting observation! I'm not familiar especially with dogs, grew up in a cat household & most of my friends are cat people also, but it certainly seems as if Clementine has to an extent copied the behavior of the dogs she grew up with! Bonded with Polly & tried to do as she did...?? Some cats will fetch (if they are in the mood); my Aby did it. Love to hear the other CPers views on this ...quire unusual!

Re: An observations i made..

sounds ok to me luke, any way i have a dog who thought he was a cat for a while well only dog in the house being brought up with 3 cats what did i expect
my cats they start off grooming each other and it ends up getting rough and a full scale kitty spat breaks out, not a hate fight like u see 2 strange cats doing, but enough for me to have to clean up loads of fur. and ive noticed reg has a bite on his back from their fight the other night.

I think maybe she either honestlly believes she is a dog..or mimics what behaviour she copied from Polly at such a young age (seeing her as ma perhaps?)

No, cats have too innate a sense of their "catness"; I think she's just copying what she learned from Polly as the proper way to behave.

I can't think what its called at present ( i think its inrprinting), like when a VERY young duckling sees something (i.e a human) and thinks of that person/thing as "mummy" so does as they do (in a manner of speaking)?

Re: An observations i made..

Right, Luke it is called imprinting...Konrad Lorenz did a lot of work on this in the last century; also you may have read that whooping cranes are endangered here in the States: they're taking eggs from nests and rearing the chicks in captivity to be released later as adults, but are very very careful to tend them wearing adult crane suits so the chicks will NOT imprint on humans. Sounds silly but it's working. My point being that Clemmie was too old to imprint on Polly when you got her; I think it is a case of copying behavior. I can't recall the name of the Lorenz book/s; will look it up; think you might find it interesting!
