Clock change - what do you think

Oh how I hate this annual torture.
I think we should leave the clocks as they are now and put them forward an hour in the spring, to bring us in line with the rest of western Europe. We'd then change autumn & spring, as before.
We lose so much useful daylight time in the afternoon/early evening, particularly through March.
I know people in the far north complain, that they would not get daylight till after 10am during the shortest days but..... there are not that many light hours anyway at that latitude at that time ..... the population of Highland, The Western Isles, Orkney & Sheltand is 280 000. All of Britain should not be beholden to the views of that small a number. No-one decrees what clock time you have to get up/start school etc. Those communities could work out their own routines. School could run 10.30 - 3pm with only a brief break during those few difficult weeks?

Anyway, I've put a poll.

I agree with you DM. It's a pain to have to keep remembering the clock change, and I don't like it getting dark quite so early.

Also, as we spend a lot of our time dealing with suppliers and clients in mainland Europe it would benefit us business-wise, to have the same time as they!

I know it was originally brought in to assist farmers etc, but they are such a minority now, rather than a staple of the economy it's seems silly for a modern nation to be driven by such a small percentage of the community.

Well if the people of England want it changed then let them change it in England and Scotland will remain as is - I get fed up listening to the debate every year and think there are far more important issues to deal with in the world

You're quite right Emm. It just amazes me that govt after govt refuses to do this - it would make people feel better. I resent the fact that at least 30 good March evening hours are being denied me and everyone. We could garden, sport, etc etc .... much better than being indoor people for so long.

It dosen't bore me it angers me - I get fed up hearing how the clock changes benefit Scotland and not England and that there aren't enough people in Scotland to matter about any way.

I have never heard this I simply think changing them backward and foreward pointless and a waste of time. It is dark enough in the winter without putting the clocks back.

Well, when I said I had never heard of it I meant before this thread!!!

Let's hope that if it is debated enough then the Government will eventually stop the debacle.

I doubt the government will ever do anything about it - I think the only solution would be for England to stop changing the clock and allow Scotland to carry on doing it - problem solved
