Childhood Christmas Traditions

Tonight I sat and made paper chains with the girls to hang in the hallway I remember doing this with my mum at Christmas time and it got me thinking on all the other things we used to do. Every year I got taken to the big carnival in Glasgows Kelvin Hall (now the sports arena). This was my Christmas Eve treat, we also used to light all the candle ornaments my mum had and sing carols. I can't take the girls to a fair but I'm going to do the candle thing, and our own tradition of reading a nativity book every night from the 18th (they have a lovely one that takes that long to read). What memories of Christmas do you have, adn have you started any 'traditions' of your own?

Re: Childhood Christmas Traditions

Alex, I used to love making paper chains. Myself and my brother & sister made then every year and I thought they were fab. That brought back happy memories.

Sixpence in the chrissie pudding my nan used to make. Sorry, can't think of anymore.

Re: Childhood Christmas Traditions

It took a lot for me to actually not put out the santa made from a toilet roll middle and cotton wool, and the angel made from cardboard, poster paint and tissue paper but I finally stopped exhuming decorations made by my (then) 3 & 4 year olds a few years back! I think they are still in the decorations box though!

Yes, we have a family christmas tradition, dating back as long as I can remember (so that is a long, long, time! ). About 7 pm xmas night, after sandwiches etc, we gather up all our pennies and small change and sit for an evening of playing 'nap' for pennies. We set up a kitty, which means you have to continue until someone gets 'nap' and can claim the booty. Play continues, with small breaks for comfort stops and recharging of glasses, sometimes until the small hours. No one earns enough to change their life! Usually the range is -£1 to +£2

Not very interesting but it's as much part of our family xmas as the meal.

Re: Childhood Christmas Traditions

My father always used to take us out for a Christmas meal on Christmas eve, carols were always played in the restaurant .......... as kids we used to think that was marvellous!

Waking up to one of Mum's stockings lying on the bottom of the bed stuffed with goodies ........ always an apple and an orange in the foot...... also long barley sugar twists..... sugar mice......

The silver threepenny bit (I still have some now!) in the Christmas pud........

They sound lovely! I still have to drag out the 'fab' decorations made by the kids, and they are added to every year, but it wouldn't be Christmas without them, lol.

Re: Childhood Christmas Traditions

For me the memories are midnight mass every Christmas Eve and in those days midnight mass was at midnight! Followed by my aunt and uncle coming back to ours for a sherry and a whiskey and the smell of my uncle's cigars is still as strong to me as ever
