The power and the inertia of the senior medical staff was quite chilling - and incredibly frustrating to Gerry Robinson! The one orthopaedic surgeon who seemed to want to make progress was the one bright light - though I suppose they did finally improve things in the childrens unit. (You could hear the incredulity in Robinson's voice when he thought the docs would refuse to take the suggested one extra child per clinic, to reduce the waiting time from 8 weeks to 2 weeks - "These are sick children, for goodness sake!" ) It appears that medicine is a profession for avaricious megalomaniacs Remember Nye Bevan at the inception of the NHS, discussing how to get the doctors on board "I will have to stuff their mouths with gold". Doctors are getting more and more money but appearing less and less flexible. I find it amazing that many GPs are now on £100k pa and therefore seeking to reduce their work to 4 days a week! Yet they don't do any evening or weekend work! Ho hum - rant over (until I watch the second part of the series tonight?) |

I will watch part 2 tonight. I to thought the change to the children's dept would not happen I thought how sad the head of the consultants there, had to side step and go to the top to stop the consultants there going behind her back and stopping the change. Do these people not want to help people I thought that was the role of a Doctor? and operations don't happen on a Friday afternoon as the consultants do not want to work!!!!!! stunning. The all day surgery seemed to be the answer but found it amazing that the other surgeons could have all day and instead of doing 9 surgeries as the one chap did could do 3 and get the same amount of money - scary. |

Well just watched part 2 and feel as frustrated as Gerry Robinson. The NHS needs effective/hands on managers end of story. Hopefully trhe next programme that follows it Helen house will show another side of the caring system. |

Isn't the Chief Executive a wimp? Seems to me that each hospital needs a medical director - a senior doctor who moves to admin/management. Like schools are led by people who started as teachers and have worked their way up, gaining experience and earning respect. |
