What was your childhood ambition?

Following on from Charlies thread on what we do now. I was just wondering what you thought you would be when you were a child/teenager?

From as early as I could remember I wanted to be a nurse/midwife. I got part of the way there . What was your burning ambition or fantasy career?

Re: What was your childhood ambition?

I went thru a series of ambitions: at one point, after reading Roy Chapman Andrews book about the discovery of fossil dinosaur eggs in China I wanted to be an archaeologist; later I was very big into entomology; and in high school working on the class paper I decided journalism would be interesting. However, it eventually dawned on me that men went on the expeditions and covered the hot stories: women stayed in the museums assembling potsherds or cataloguing specimens, or worked on the so-called Society pages. This was in the late 30s and 40s, when there was real gender discrimination. My parents, even though they were born in the 19tth century, were very advanced in their thinking: they never said "a woman can't do that",,,let me figure it out for myself. Which I did. Minored in education in college, decided I didn't like teaching after practice teaching sessions, and just drifted into a job and stayed there. We have come a long way, baby, as the saying goes! Women can do anything now!!! Sorry this is a bit long...

Re: What was your childhood ambition?

Probably from the age of about 8, when my Dad sparked a love of drawing and art within me, I wanted to be a graphic designer. Which of course I did become!

I think it was because he was so very good at 'commercial art' as it was know then, and had to give it up to pursue a proper career (electrical engineering), that I kind of felt I needed to fulfil that dream for him.

Re: What was your childhood ambition?

As a youngish child I wanted to be an actress as the years went on and it was clear my mother would not support me if I went to Drama school I had a burning ambition to be in the mounted police but at that time, there were height limits and I just wasn't tall enough. Both my parents were teachers, my dad was a deputy head so I got pushed in that direction but I left uni after only a couple of terms 'cos I just didn't want to be a teacher. I went straight into nurse training and became a registered nurse.

Re: What was your childhood ambition?

From as far back as I could remember to about 14 years old I wanted to be a vet - I was a big fan of All Creatures Great and Small - I think thats why I wanted to be one plus I loved animals

Then I started to get bullied at school and started to not go - so wasn't able to get the grades to get into vet school. I did do a certificate while at school where I helped a teacher in primary school - I absolutetly loved it and they were trying to encourage me to do teacher training - but it was too late by then the bullying was so bad I left and went to London - to find my fortune ...... didn't find it

I'm quite happy with what I do now but I am thinking about getting my degree so I can go into teaching - I really would love to teach Religious Studies

Dandysmom - I studied Archaeology and Anthropology for 1 year at Uni - I had to pull out because I couldn't get funding to carry on - but it was a huge disappointment - you were not allowed to freely think
