Food shortages

Well, the floods appear to have taken its toll on the supermarkets and food stores now . In my local Sainsbury's they had no cabbages at all, and potatoes were in short supply.......the reasons given were either the lorries couldn't get through to deliver or there was a shortage. Yesterday's milk delivery didn't reach the store until the afternoon either.

It is also sad to read of the 100's of farm animals who lost their lives in the floods..... The poor farmers have been really hit this time..

Re: Food shortages

Absolutely Mags.
We have had plenty of rain but no real floods down here, but driving to and from Mum's yesterday it was easy to see cereal crops flattened in the fields. Some will be salvageable with a couple of good weeks but .... who knows?
As for the flood hit areas - well, the vale of Evesham is one huge market garden for southern England and has been swamped. On the other hand, East Anglia has not had too bad a year.
............... and I've lost my potatoes and outdoor tomatoes! Beans and leeks are doing good. Sweetcorn is growing well but will need some sun to grow good ears.

We'll have to relearn about eating locally and eating seasonally.

Re: Food shortages

We're facing problems here also, but because of the drought! No locally grown sweet corn or tomatoes from the Eastern Shore, and the Midwest has been scorched with 100 degree+ temps, not good for the crops there, and of course floods and torrential rains in Texas/Oklahoma. A weird year weatherwise...we shall see food prices soaring!
