It sounds as though he's scratching as the patch has a scab on it. Something seems to have irritated him. One of my old cats, Midge, was very sensitive to fleas and used to scratch her fur out, are you sure he couldn't possibly have a couple of fleas? |

You cat may be stressed out, as well, when I moved homes my one cat MuTan got very stressed and began to pull his own hair out. This isn't very uncommon for a cat to do, has there been any recent changes in your cat's regime? |
