Indoors or outdoors?

I have 3 older cats who have been allowed to free roam around the block where my parents house since they were kittens. Luckly we are not beside a main road, and the cats seem to have lived within the 8 houses around us, lying on gardens and fences. I have been very lucky and not had any problems with them coming in and out as they wish. However, the next cats I get, I am considering keeping them indoors, while harness training them to take to the local park. Part of this reason is I may still be in flats but I also feel it would be safer. My old cats could never be made into house cats, and have lived free for the last 14 years, but this was my parents decission. I am now trying to come up with my own thoughts and views on the subject, now that im old enough. What are peoples views on this?

Well, I have 3 cats who are indoors only and live very happily! They do however have LOTS of toys and scratching posts etc to keep them occupied. It is entirely a personal decision I think!

Cats do very well living just indoors and also going out on a harness (start as early as you can with that). As Alex said, LOTS of toys, scratching posts etc to keep them stimulated as well as regular playtimes from you.

I know lots of cats are kept as indoor cats, but it just doesn't seem natural to me...sorry

My two are indoor cats. I'm going to take them out on a harness later on.
At least indoor cats dont get stollen or run over You really do have to give them stimulation I think though

Re: Indoors or outdoors?

I have 5 that only go in the garden, its secure and they cant get out, I did keep the BSH in all the time, but seeing them in the garden I dont think it would be fair to them now too keep them in, they love playing and racing round, they just cant do that to the same extent in the house. Only Scooter goes "out," after 13yrs or so, he couldnt change his ways, he goes to the end of the drive (2 further houses) and does his business by the trees and comes back again, then I have to hunt through the undergrowth to find his business to clean it up!

I dont see anything wrong with keeping Cats indoors and I would certainly prefer this to having Cats killed on a road, which made my decision for me about securing my garden.
Dawn.

I think it depends on where you live..I live in a quiet cul-de-sac, and my cats go in and out as they please..if I lived in a busy area they would have to be indoor cats, or the garden designd so they could not get out
