YES!!! Surprise birthday present from my OH some years ago now. It was brilliant and I would recommend it to anyone. Landing was a bit scary but otherwise it was ace. Only slightly less exciting than going up in a helicopter.

Emphatically no! I am uneasy about heights; even climbing a ladder gives me the shakes..

Ooh glad there's someone here who has experienced it

We are thinking of taking a balloon trip in Egypt, flying over the Valley of the Kings and the Historic sights in a few weeks time but need a few answers first .......... so I'm going to pick your brains Angie, if you don't mind

Firstly, how easy is it to get into the basket, I understand they are about 4ft deep.
My hubby has a dodgy knee and can only bend it slightly ........ some people have said you have to climb into the basket ....are there any steps at all?

Secondly....... would he be handicapped by his knee when landing .....again I have heard all different stories

I certainly agree about the helicopter ride being exciting, we went up in one when we went to Florida. It was strange at first as the bottom of it was all glass and it was weird looking straight down through your feet and seeing the ground..

Re: Hot air balloon.......

Hi Mags - flying over the Valley of the Kings would be absolutely wonderful! I'll try and answer your questions as best I can, I have also consulted OH for his opinions too.

1) getting into the basket is relatively easy although the one I went in was certainly 4 foot deepish. The people who run the flights help you in (I can't remember any steps). On the flight I went on there was an 87 year old lady who managed with help.
2) landing is definitely tricky. You need to be able to assume the "crash position" with bent knees and arms around your head. We had a tricky landing with side winds and it was bumpy and bounced, so there is at least the possibility of a hard landing. But in the hot air of Egypt, it may be a different story and the landing could be soft and gentle, in which case your hubby would be OK.

If I were you (or your hubby) I'd probably ask my GP in the first instance or perhaps contact a ballooning club locally?

Thanks for your prompt reply Angie, it's good to hear from someone who has experienced it

If an 87 year old lady managed to get in the basket I feel pretty sure my hubby would manage it also

I don't think there will be any strong winds somehow when we go as temps are 38º/39º over there now!
His problem will be getting into the "crash position" he would have to leave one leg stretched out and it's a case of whether they would allow that. Maybe they would let him sit on the floor of the basket instead

Re: Hot air balloon.......

Hello again Mags. Here is a photo of me and my hubby in the balloon! Not sure if you can tell from the picture but the interior of the basket is sectioned, a bit like a wine carrier! I don't expect that your hubby would be able to sit (even if it was allowed) as his spine would then be vulnerable. Of course, it may be that the whole thing is done differently for honored paying guests in Egypt - is there anyway you could find out more on t'internet?

(In case you're wondering, I'm the little person in the front next to the bearded man who is my hubby.)
