A little corner of Poland in Devonhttp://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/7622866.stm I was mooching around the BBC website when I was surprised to come across this article. It's about the Polish transit camp (now care home) where my elderly Aunt is down in Devon. But I nearly fell off my chair when I read down to see an actual quote from my Aunt in the text telling how she and my Dad and Grandmother fled Poland (fled is a bit of a misnomer as actually they were expelled by the Russians and taken as prisoners to Siberia)!! I'm kind of proud that in just over a year she's gone from confused, recently-widowed old lady to someone who's happy to give interviews to the BBC

That's wonderful that she is so happy after the past year, and she's giving interviews to the BBC And what an interesting article too, will read it over again when I get home and by brain isn't in 'work-mode'. |

That was a most interesting article, Yola; learned things I didn't know. How wonderful that your aunt has adapted so well and seems happy; yes, that will make great reading for the boys when they're older. Thanks for sharing. |

How fascinating Yola There is a considerable Polish community here in the Valleys of south Wales. Our neighbour is second generation Polish, his dad came after the war to work in the mines. Around us we have Soliks, Jablonskis, Pedericks and Klebickis As usual, the names threw a lot of us Jones' so Dai Polka, and Dai-ski, became familiar affectionate nicknames for our new friends . My dad has great fondness for the Poles, hardworking lads who fought bravely in WW2. |
