When I was working, especially downtown, there were always vendors in the street stalls selling poppies; have not seen any around in a long time, sadly ..... |

Bloody awful innit BM, how some lowlife can get away with disrespecting the cause like that. Found it a job to get poppies from the street this year. Always got them from vendors outside Woolies but not thus time. Had to get my dad to get them for us from the British Legion club! but yes I see a lot more youngsters wearing them so that's encouraging |

Ended up going to the cenotaph lol, and it was wonderful to see such a large turnout, even with the miserable weather we had. Loads of youth groups and young people. Lovely service. We will remember them x |

my grandad lost a brother in the ww1. he was 19. so a whole side of my family wiped out. i hate war. too many innocents get killed. my MIL lost her entire family to a bomb killed all of them except her. so she didnt know any of her family. she dont even know exactly how old she is. |

How sad for your MIL, BM. and your grandad too. There are those victims of war who live to tell the tale; they never see combat but their lives are changed forever. I didnt go to my local cenotaph, weather is atrocious (lame excuse I know) but I watched on tv. Two years ago I went up to London and saw it all for real. It was very moving. The vets are such heroes, and make me proud to think this generation gave so much for us, we'll never be able to repay them. I clapped my hands raw that day but I'd do it every year for them. |

There were poppies placed round the base of the Spitfire on the island by older men who served at the airbase that was here during the 2nd WW. My estate is built where the airfield was, and where spitfires were built. When the statue first went up about 4 years ago the older men placed poppies round the base.....then last year and this year a section (not sure what they were called) of the Air Cadets whose headquarters is on my estate.....small group of about 40 lads and girls aged between 12 and about 17 (the rest were at the main memorial in the city centre. Plus a couple of their adult "tutors" I suppose they are called, joined the older men and saluted the statue. Do you know the traffic stopped of its own accord. This on a main road (any who know Castle Vale West Mids and know where the Spifire island is...know how busy it is. The traffic actually stopped..........no one pipped a horn nothing.....silence at 11am....more moving than most things I have seen. And then a young lad stepped forward and played the last post on the bugle, then old and young turned and marched back......and the traffic moved on. |
