struvite crystals-again!

I havent been on here for quite a while so not sure if anyone will remember Ravens bladder problems. here are some links to threads i made months ago:

http://www.catsey.com/showthread.php?t=27670

http://www.catsey.com/showthread.php?t=29277

The poor guy has been on prescription food since last may now, despite me reading in several places including a packet of the food we use, that you should only use for a few months. well today we brought another urine sample up and it STILL has struvite crystals in the nurse said that it was showing something like triple phosphrate cyrstals. my OH took the call so not 100% sure. we have been told to keep him on the waltham urinary food for another 3-6 months now and retest again in 3 months time. im not happy at all, my poor boy. does anyone else have experience with these problems and being told to keep a cat on prescription food for so long?

Re: struvite crystals-again!

I remember Raven well JB. I am so sorry he still has the struvite problems. Merlin had the same problems years ago and he was on the special diet for YEARS. It was a long time ago and I can't remember exactly how long, but it was long enough for the food to change 3 times during that period. He was hospitalised initially and I remember having to hold him whilst he was having an ultrasound scan sometime later. He continued on the low Ph food until about 2 years ago, when he refused to eat it any more. It is purely an estimate, but I would say he was on the prescription diet for at least 6 years.

What is your vet suggesting as further treatment?

Re: struvite crystals-again!

Thankyou Angie, i remember you and Merlin too the vet has basically just said to keep him on the prescription food for 3-6 months and to restest the urine in another 3 months but i guess if your boy was on prescription food for so long that may be the norm. i just wonder why they put warnings etc on the foods not to feed them for too long if the vet is happy for them to stay on it? luckily he is showing absolutely no symptoms of having any problems, goes the toilet fine and regularly and is well and truely back to his grumpy old self so atleast thats something. but because of those things i was so sure this urine sample would be normal so i am quite disappointed that it wasnt. luckily he enjoys the royal canin food more and he lost all the horrid weight he'd put on while being on the hills prescription diet food

Leo had this problem about 6 years ago, he was on prescription diet for about 3 months, and that was it, had no trouble since......

Hi sorry to hear about Raven`s predicament, hope the next sample is better, it is abit of a worry when they have to be on prescription diets isn`t it, my Maxi is on the Hills I/D for his bowels which I think maybe on a long term basis .

Will have to wait and see.
