Scam warning!

Mike just got a call from somebody saying they were from the government and were working on getting back all the bank charges he had recieved over the last 5 years. They said a form would be sent out, but would he tell them which bank and which current account would he like it to be paid to. They then started to ask about his bank details. At this point Mike refused to give out details and said he would fill out that kind of thing when the form came in, they then became quite pushy, Mike ask for their address and postcode and said he would google it to see where they were, they hung up.
This was all done by somebody with a heavy indian accent and the man called himself James Smith.
This may be genuine, but we doubt it and will wait to see if any official forms are sent out.

Anyway please be careful and don't be fooled into giving your bank details over the phone, no matter how pushy or agressive they became

WOAH! Glad Mike dealt with that well coz that sounds nasty! Just as well he had the sense to think about it and NOT give out the details. Well done Mike.

Hope this man gets caught, quickly!

Blimey! These scammers are dangerous people. Imagine that was an elderly person unable to think things through clearly

Thanks, Farthing. Never, never never give out sensitive information like that over the phone to a stranger! Or on line, either...I frequently get "phishing" e-mails purportedly from credit card issuers...report therm instantly to the real sites!

There's a lot of spam atm from phishers pretending to be ebay or paypal. I always forward them to the "spam@***" and feel very reassured when I get reports back confirming that the message was spam. It's probably an automated service but I feel (probably stupidly!) reassured!

Re: Scam warning!

Definitely a scam! All claims for unfair bank charges have been put on a 'stay' pending an investigation by the OFT.

As do I! It must be very common, as they all have "fraud" addresses for you to forward the questionable e-mail to. I wonder how many people do fall for those fraudulent e-mails and end up in a world of trouble?
