Sometimes I hate my job

Sorry for the self-pity but I need to vent and OH is still at work! Just got in from one of the worst days ever.
First had to tell a man suffering from terminal cancer that his much-loved dog is suffering from an advanced form of lymphoma after picking up an orange-sized mass attached to her heart Poor man was understandably distraught, telling us that he would take his own life if he lost his dog-couldn't comfort him at all.
Then young couple come in with an 8 week old puppy, completely comatose with nasty ocular discharge. 'Only been like this for a hour' Gave emergency treatment of fluids and glucose then looking at his eyes realised it looked like distemper Neither parents of pup have ever been vacc'd, they've had puppy for 2 weeks, the fact that he hadn't eaten for 48hrs didn't worry them at all-it's all just so frustrating!
I've just had to help the puppy make his way to heaven So heartbreaking, just sat and cuddled him as he went, poor poor baby.
Sorry for my rant, off to rown my sorrows with some left over birthday chocolate. No wine as I have to work tomorrow.
Lxxx

Oh I hate horrible days....you'd have to fight me for the chocolate though.
Sometimes it does make you wonder about people's common sense doesn't it (couple with puppy).
Then you wonder how much the human spirit can stand (the chap with the poorly dog)

Sorry you have had a hard day, have another piece of chocolate.....Karen

Re: Sometimes I hate my job

After a really really bad day like today it's hard to remember the happy times you've saved an animal from the brink of death and restored it to health, or had a successful outcome from a stressful birth .... I have the greatest respect for nurses and vets who do these miracles every day, I couldn't do it; thank God there are people who do! Where would we be without you?

Hope a good cry and the chocolate helped, (((hugs)))

Re: Sometimes I hate my job

I know how you feel, I've had to help the vet with a couple of very sad cases and cried for days.
I try to look upon the fact, I've helped the animal in the only way I could and, in those cases, to a better place.
Luckily, as we are the small branch, I don't have to do it too often, but even when I know it is the right thing I'm heartbroken.

Chin up, and tomorrow something will happen to make you smile!
