Chook pics

Thought I'd introduce the two latest additions. Think that will be it for now, any more and we'll not have any use for the eggs and that would be a waste.

Friend of OH promised me two Australorp hens. Duly arrived and after two weeks discovered we had a boy and a girl.

Have tried to give him away but to no avail. So - he stays.
Jack

Jack again

Sheila and her wee friend Phantom

The flock!

Lovely pictures CM! I do love your hen pictures. So, will you be greeting the patter of tiny cheeping chicks come Spring???

What DO you do with your eggs?

Re: Chook pics

If one of them goes broody then I'll let her sit, but only one - I don't want to have the down side of baby chicks (what to do with the boys? )

Eggs - some people at work order them from me and club together to buy a bag of feed for me now and then. Give some away to family and close friends. The rest we enjoy as omelettes etc., egg mayo, in baking and the odd one to the dog.

So far has not had to deal with a surplus - as the breeds I have, in the most part, are not daily layers.

Def cannot have any more though or eggstras will be a problem.

Re: Chook pics

Great pics, what a lovely little flock you have there! Dumb question, does a neutered male (capon) still crow?

Do you like Chinese food? Foo yungs are a great way to fix eggs ...ham fu yung, shrimp fu yung, etc. A change from frittatas,, omelettes, although they're all basically eggs with stuff in them.

Re: Chook pics

You can't get a cock bird caponised in the UK Eileen as it is illegal here. But to answer your Q, they do not crow.

What breed is Phantom?....

She is a silver laced wyandotte - really sweet and she has the yellowest legs too.

Re: Chook pics

Lovely mix of chooks, I do love the range of colours you get.

You can also freeze eggs (not tried it myself, yet). Aparently you must freeze the yolk and white seperately. If you put them in ice cube trays- one cube of yolk and 2 cubes of white make an egg!
