Done with mice

Well one of my mice has developed tumors again. I got up this morning and the one that didn't have the tumors is dead. I don't know what happened. But the guy with the tumors isn't looking like he'll last long either. I will not buy more pet store mice, it is just too sad how they die

Re: Done with mice

Thanks.
I think the genetics are poor b/c mice from pet stores tend to be used as "feeders". I've been always getting a replacement mouse when one passes away so the remaining is not lonely but at this point I think I just need the cycle to stop and after this last one succumbs to the tumors that is just it for me and mice, it's not worth it to me

Re: Done with mice

I understand how you feel, rats are the same. We had Karly PTS a couple of weeks ago due to breathing problems and tumours and now Una has skin cancer- we are keeping her comfortable but her time is limited.

What is so shocking is that a wild rat ( kept as a pet) can live for 10 years, most domestic rats only live 2-3. Same issue- inbreeding as lab rats.

So sorry Tink - I think you're wise, you don't need the extra sadness.

Re: Done with mice

That is such a shame. It just shows the effect that in breeding has on these wee guys.

I think it is a wise move not to perpetuate the heartbreak it causes you.

((hugs))

Re: Done with mice

It's the same story with pet shop hamsters, I'm afraid.

Upsetting isnt it.

Re: Done with mice

Yeah I don't think I'll be having rodents anymore..at least not any from a pet shop environment.
The remaining mouse doesn't seem too lonely or depressed so that makes me feel a little better. If she was too horribly lonely by herself I was going to try to rehome her so she'd have a friend and I wouldn't be restarting the cycle but she seems content so she can live her days out with me. That's not a problem with me. She will be the last though.
