New Year superstitions

We haven't had our 'first footing' yet, no darkhaired stranger to my door- but there are lots of other sayings and customs associated with New Year.

My late MIL was very obsessed with not washing clothes on NYday, she said you wash a family member away

Well, I'll not bother then, anything to get out of that Does it apply to ironing too-hope so.

Any favourites that you observe?

Re: New Year superstitions

Not heard of the not washing thing - sad really as I've done 2 loads this morning. Perhaps as the washing machine actually did the washing it doesn't count? Fingers crossed!!!

Re: New Year superstitions

Oh no PP, wish i'd read this thread earlier i've already done a wash load.
I always try to let Howard do the first footing as he has the darkest hair. I have a little bag with a sixpence (so we will have money), a piece of coal (warmth),bread (food) and a Black Cat (luck)

Re: New Year superstitions

Apart from First Footing, there's only one superstition I've heard of which is not to open your calendar for the New Year until Jan 1st - if you've been given one for Christmas for example.

Yes i've heard this one too, Angie.
Yesterday someone told me that it was bad luck to wish someone happy new year before midnight

Gosh I got loads of them! Is it bad luck for the one wishing you happy new year or for the receiver?

Re: New Year superstitions

Oh dear, I opened all of my calendars to look at the pics and decide which two to hang! And did wish a few people Happy New Year yesterday. But washing was not on my radar for today!

A superstition here is that you should have paid all your bills before today ... which I've done.
