A Bit of Family History

I came across two links with my father's family history on our recent trip to GCR - strong reminders for me of a much harder life.

My paternal grandfather was a "Boilermaker's Holder-up" which involved holding red hot rivets on the inside of the boiler while the riveter made the external rivet.

We came across this rusted boiler awaiting restoration. I hope there's a bit more modern way now of making those rivets.

This was the rather cramped inside -

My own father avoided following his father's footsteps at the GWR works and joined the Army before the outbreak of WW2. He was in the Tank Corp - just a coincidence that in the same engine shed, there was a huge diesel ...

Just strange how things sort of fall together.

It is strange Angie. The holder up job sounds awful

not something I would fancy, that's for sure! My aunt is very into this family history business. She's traced my paternal side of the family back to the 1700's so far!

Re: A Bit of Family History

The holder-up job was not nice Shelley - most of the men went at least partially deaf. Oddly, my dad didn't mention his father was deaf, but he didn't talk much about his father at all ............ there is history there that I know nothing about. He always spoke fondly of his mother.

Alex - your aunt has done very well. I can trace my maternal grandfather's family back very sketchily to Switzerland in 1600s but I am having trouble with dad's family as before they worked for GWR I am presuming they were agricultural labourers and moved about a lot. I need to keep trying!

wow, that is impressive! I know my aunt has traced family from all over Ireland, and apparently there is a viking connection too, but no idea where lol. I must ask her how she's getting on with it the next time we speak.
